iPhone 5

Last year Apple took everyone by surprise when it christened the newest ‘i’ device iPhone 4S rather than what was expected by all - iPhone 5. While iPhone 4S was a pleasant upgrade and introduced us to some smashing featurea such as Siri, it didn’t undergo any visual changes from the iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 is special as it is said to be Steve Job’s most ambitious project. We can expect a complete overhaul of the iPhone with this new device that is all set to enter the Apple portfolio officially. While like its ancestry, the iPhone 5 has enjoyed the limelight way before its release, the rumoured release date is toggling between three months – August, September and October. We have gathered all the rumours and speculations, and put these tidbits together to bring to you what we know about the iPhone 5 so far.

Display:
The display of the iPhone 5 appears to be the most talked-about feature. The iPhone 5 coming with a larger display is one of the earliest rumors that we heard. By the end of May, there were leaked pictures of the iPhone 5 components, which showed that the smartphone will maintain the same width as the iPhone 4/4S but come with a taller screen. The screen is likely to be 4.6-inches and the battery has also been spruced up to keep up with the new screen size. We won’t just get a new larger display but the company also plans to dish out a thinner display. Apple is using a technology that integrates touch sensors into the LCD. This will make it thinner and negate the use of another touch-screen layer. DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase explains this fact by stating, “The absence of the layer, usually about half-a-millimeter thick, not only makes the whole screen thinner, but improves the quality of displayed images”. So, this would make the device overall sleeker and also enhance the viewing quality.

Dock Connector:
The iPhone 5 will also infuse a new dock connector as per the latest buzz on the Internet. Apple is said to ditch the 30-pin connector for a 19-pin one. Now, the new connector means the makers of the current accessories in the market are in for some trouble. While the news about the new connector is almost confirmed, iMore reveals that Apple plans to bring in some relief for the current accessory ecosystem by supposedly shipping an adapter with the iPhone 5 which will make it compatible with the current accessories. As the 30-pin connector will be replaced by a 19-pin connector, it will reportedly make room for the earphone jack to move to the bottom of the screen.

NFC:
While Google Android and Microsoft’s Windows 8 come with full support for NFC, Apple fans will be delighted with the recent rumours that Apple also plans the integration of the same with the iPhone 5. 9to5Mac’s investigation into a prototype phone that Apple has been testing leads them to believe that the next iPhone will have Near Field Communication (NFC) controllers built into the Power Management Unit. During WWDC, Apple showed off PassBook, one of the new features in iOS 6 that allows users to use their phone as a wallet and pay for goods and services. Now, one of the simplest ways of achieving this is through NFC, which makes it similar to Google’s Wallet and Microsoft’s newly announced ‘Wallet’ app, all of which serve the same purpose. Jim Peters, CTO of SITA, firmly believes that the next iPhone will have NFC, “Opinion is that Apple is going to incorporate NFC into Passbook. Apple just thinks about how they can make it really easy for the user, and then they figure out how to monetise it. They don’t think about how to monetise it and then tell the user what they can have. There is a lot of debate that NFC will never take off because of all the arguments. But you need to get ready, this is coming. This is going to happen. By the end of the year the majority of smartphones that you go and buy will have NFC on them. If in October the next iPhone comes out and it has NFC on it, it’s game over”. However, we’d say, take it with a pinch of salt.

Processor and RAM:
There have been rumours about the iPhone 5 featuring an A6 processor from early this year as there was a screenshot of Apple testing quad-core processors in the iOS 5.1 Beta update. Though it was expected that Apple would launch a quad-core A6 processor on the new iPad, they did not do so and instead added a dual-core A5X processor with updated graphics that is capable of supporting Retina Display. DigiTimes lately published a report saying that Apple is working on a quad-core processor based on Samsung's Exynos 4 architecture for the iPhone 5. If this is to be believed it would make the iPhone 5 the most powerful Apple device ever. Also, the new iPhone is said to be equipped with 1GB of RAM.

4G LTE and Nano SIM:
While it is believed that iPhone 5 is already in production, a report by BGR claims otherwise. It states that the Apple smartphone is in EVT3 stage, one of the numerous Engineering Validation Test (EVT) phases. Further, it is expected to enter Design Verification Test (DVT). So there is a time window before production begins. Along with this, BGR also revealed that the engineering sample of the iPhone 5 comes with 4G LTE connectivity, along with 1GB RAM. There have also been reports that European manufactures are stocking up for nano SIMs as they prepare for the launch of the iPhone 5. Reports confirming this said that sources from within multiple network carriers have informed that Apple has supplied nano SIM adaptors to carriers to test the usability of this new standard of SIM cards.

Camera:
While there are rumours that the new iPhone design may put the camera to the center position above the earpiece rather than on the side, there are also rumours of an upgraded front facing camera. With the new cellular support for Facetime, we wouldn’t be surprised if Apple plans to spruce up this experience with an upgraded camera.

Design changes:
While last year, there were rumours about iPhone 5’s tapering design, which were ignited by Case-Mate showing off new cases for the dainty design. However, no such rumour has sparked off since. In fact, as we have learned the iPhone will come with the same width as the previous two models but with a larger screen. Also, it is said to feature a thin screen, which will mean the iPhone with be tall and slim, the kind of design Apple products such as its music players are known for. Then, we went on to see a video via eTradeSupply that shows a leaked part that is neither a battery door nor a middle plate. It is a single integrated part – back plate. The iPhone 5 back plate is one piece anchored by an aluminum alloy. Besides the relocation of the headphone jack from the top to the bottom, it will feature a redesigned speaker grille and connector dock. The SIM tray is also said to be a lot smaller on the chassis that was shot in the video and when placed in the SIM slot of the iPhone 4/ 4S, it did not exactly fit. If these leaked images are in fact the back and front plates of the iPhone 5, then we can expect the front facing FaceTime camera to be moved above the earpiece in a centralized position, rather than to the side, which is currently found on the iPhone 4 and 4S.

iPhone 5 to be released soon. But when?

Release date
There have been reports claiming that the demand for the iPhone 5 is likely to go through the roof. As the iPhone 4S was launched last year in October, it is speculated that Apple will launch the iPhone 5 in October. But negating this usual norm, a report appeared late last month said that it is set for a September launch. And now, the latest news has it that the iPhone 5 is slated to be launched early next month, which is likely to be August 7.

We'd like to see all these features, and obviously some more. However, to know what exactly the iPhone 5 holds within we we'll have to wait for the official launch.
